Synopsis
The end of 3 decade war has paved the way for economic revival in Sri Lanka. It’s economy recorded a positive growth of 4.2% during third quarter of 2009, with 5.1% growth in Service sector. Investment propelled economic growth continues to progress at a rate of 23% of GDP for first half of 2009. Massive infrastructure development especially in the North and Eastern provinces with construction of roads, power projects, ports, irrigation, and tourist projects. Examples Jaffna Peninsula Water and Sanitation, Kalipitiya Tourism Zone, Colombo-Katunayaka Expressway, Puttalam Coal Power Plant, Sapugaskanda Oil Refinery, and Hambantota Sea Port development jointly developed with the Asia Development Bank and various companies from China.
Anil (whose practice in the last 2 years has seen an increase in his Sri Lanka related work with one of the largest arbitration matter and preliminary front end infrastructure contract advisory work while he is on the panel of Arbitrators of the ICC Sri Lanka branch and honourary advisor to the Colombo International Arbitration Centre) will discuss some of the interesting infrastructure and investment issues arising out of Sri Lanka.
About the SpeakerAnil is a partner with Aequitas Law LLP. He has been in practice since 1995 and his work primarily involves commercial, civil, corporate and criminal litigation and dispute resolution work. He represents parties in Singapore and the region including Sri Lanka, Australia, and Hong Kong in civil (contractual; property management corporation disputes, claims & conveyancing; bankruptcy, banking & factoring; debt recovery, hire purchase & leasing; employment; defamation; personal injury, accident & insurance claims; matrimonial and probate) matters; construction disputes resolution (litigation, arbitration, adjudication & mediation); corporate litigation (liquidation & schemes of arrangements); corporate advisory work (including on front-end construction & infrastructure contracts, partnership, shareholders, joint ventures, advertising and loan agreements); with a focus on construction, infrastructure and international arbitration work.
Prior to joining Aequitas in 2009, Anil spent a year with the international arbitration practice group at the international law firm of Lovells Lee & Lee in Singapore and two years before that as in-house counsel, director and head of Davis Langdon & Seah S’pore Pte Ltd (the largest quantity surveying firm in Singapore)’s Contract Advisory and Dispute Management Services, involved with construction industry dispute management services (arbitration, adjudication & mediation); claims assessment; front end contract advisory for developers, building owners and contractors in residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, infrastructural and PPP projects in Singapore, India, Vietnam and Korea.
